Aquaculture and Advocacy for Green Fish Farming
The project Aquaculture and Advocacy for Green Fish Farming in Central Uganda seeks to strengthen the organization and advocacy of small-scale fishpond farmers to engage in policy dialogue with local authorities while building their capacities in sustainable aquaculture activities using green technology. This will lead to increased income for at least 100 rural fish farming families while contributing to a positive ecological balance between fish farms and the surrounding environment.
This will be done by building the capacities of fish farmers to effectively organize themselves to engage in dialogue with key duty bearers and other stakeholders for collective advocacy on their rights and interests. In addition, the project will use the supported aquaculture groups as the focal point for building the capacities of individual fish farmers to better manage their fishponds by training farmers in new, green, and improved aquaculture techniques. The project is a partnership between Access2innovation, CAPCA (Caritas Uganda), and the Danish fish feed producer Aller Aqua.

The goal of CAPCA (Caritas Uganda) is to alleviate poverty through increased agricultural production and productivity. The project supports farmers’ capacity building through trainings, farmer’s institutional building through promotion of farmers’ cooperative businesses, and provision of agricultural value addition equipment to assist farmers in adding value to their produce for better market prices for increased income. The project also supports advocacy and lobbying farmer-based activities for the farmers to engage duty bearers for improved public service delivery and implementation of farmer-friendly policies. The project supported the formation of six farmers’ cooperatives, four in Mpigi district in the parishes of Mitalamaria, Ggoli, Mpigi, and Kitakyusa parishes. The other two are in Butambala district in Kkonge and Bulo parishes.
