Makerere University is Uganda's largest university. It was founded in 1922 and has more than 40.000 students.
An impressive number of African leaders have been alumni from Makerere; including Julius Nyerere, Benjamin Mkapa and Joseph Kabila - as well as the famous writers Paul Theroux and V. S. Naipaul.
The main campus area is situated in central Kampala.
