Solar powered chicken incubator systems are creating local revenues in Budaka, Uganda.
As part of the partnership between access2innovation, Farm Mountain Coffee and Danish Agro Business, a farmer group in the village of Budaka in eastern Uganda is testing a solar powered chicken incubator system.
Originally, the partnership aimed at enhancing the revenue possibilities for farmers at the nearby Mt. Elgon, but due to the Budaka based NGO Safe Neighbourhood Foundation, the farmers in Budaka were chosen to test the new system.
Traditionally, the farmers kept chicken free range between their other crops, which made the farming process inefficient.
By collecting the eggs and hatching them in the solar powered incubator, the hatching efficiency has risen from around 8 per cent to 96 per cent.
This means immediate revenue locally that allow the farmers to pay back the incubator over a period of five years – including one year of grace.
