Sustainable biogas in Bangladesh

Biogas in Bangladesh Photo copyright: Jesper KirknæsThe changing climate is the largest global challenge that we face today. Every day, floods, deforestation, mudslides, drought and other consequences of global warming affect millions of people’s lives.
In the city of Rangpur in the north west of Bangladesh, the poor and marginalized inhabitants are also the ones that suffer the consequences of the climate changes most severely.

The primary fuel is either wood or dried manure, which raises a string of problems concerning both hygiene and the environment. It is necessary to rethink and reinvent a locally fitted alternative fuel source. This is where biogas comes into play.

Access2Information has initiated cooperation between two commercial Danish companies, DanchurchAid and the NGO RDRS Enterprise Ltd. in Bangladesh. The partnership aims to find a solution on how appropriate and environmentally friendly biogas technology can be transferred to the Rangpur area.
Key aspects of the project will be to identify a low-cost, locally fitted biogas-solution that can;
•    create income and job-opportunities for local entrepreneurs
•    improve the environmental conditions in the target areas
•    provide a source of income for people living in poverty

The project will target both poverty and climate issues by introducing a locally fitted, sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to fuel consumption in Bangladesh.
